We call ourselves the Chicago Nerd Social Club because we believe nerds are pretty social people. We embrace our nerdy identities because they’re an integral part of who we are, and in many cases, have brought us professional success, friendships and happy relationships.Anyone can be a nerd, regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or disability. Whether you’re a hardcore fan, a casual gamer, or a newbie who can't tell Klingon from Quenya, all are welcome!

Welcome to Chicago Nerd Social Club! We create spaces to socialize with other Chicago (or Chicago-adjacent and ex-Chicago) nerds, post interesting and fun links pertaining to nerdy and geeky interests of all kinds, as well as information about geeky and nerdy Chicago area social events and happenings. We’d love it if you’d post events to the CNSC Calendar! The Board of Organizers act as moderators and admins for both online spaces and in person events.CNSC aims to create a safe space for nerds of all stripes to have robust and engaging discussions and occasional debates, so there are a few House Rules. Please note these apply online and in person at any CNSC-hosted events.1 Moderation and Bans: CNSC reserves the right to deny entry or revoke access to any individual. This is an 18+ space; some of our in person events are family friendly, but our Discord (Facebook) is for adults only. The moderators also reserve the right to moderate all comment threads and posted content as the group mods see fit. Mods may or may not give warning if your comments are in violation of House Rules.

  • Please provide a brief description of what you're linking to, especially if it's an image or video you're uploading directly.

  • Please post Trigger Warnings (TW) or Content Notes (CN) with content where appropriate, and please post a content note for any visuals using flashing lights or strobe effects. We also ask that when posting items, please indicate if they're not safe for work (NSFW) with a basic description (i.e. "NSFW Robocop parody video") and include only the URL, not the preview images. NSFW posts that contain preview images are subject to removal without notice. Please also be considerate in any NSFW comment threads. In Discord, you can use spoiler tags to help other nerds decide if they want to see content with a TW or NSFW tone.

  • Spoiler policies differ between different online spaces. Please check the code of conduct in the Facebook group or the Discord server for specifics.

  • Don’t “yuck someone’s yum”. This means if someone is expressing enthusiasm or enjoyment, don’t announce your distaste for it. If the topic of discussion is problematic or flawed in a way with negative ramifications, that’s worth pointing out and discussing. But if it’s just a matter of a difference of taste, don’t bring negativity.

  • If you’ve shared someone else’s work, make sure you credit them and include a link to their website/social media whenever possible.

2 No Trolls: Comments are more likely to be deleted if they constitute a personal attack or threat toward another commenter(s), derail or are entirely unrelated to the entry topic, include false information, or entail more than a “fair use” amount of someone else’s copyrighted work. Please CNSC asks that commenters please refrain from telling other members how to feel about a given topic, i.e. “You’re taking this too seriously,” implying one is less of a fan of something because they are critical of it, etc.3 No Harassment or Unwelcome Contact: CNSC is dedicated to keeping our spaces safe and welcoming, which means that we have a zero tolerance policy for harassment. Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or other protected class status, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. It also includes unwelcome contact in the form of private messages or tagging another user. These rules apply online and in person, and any member caught harassing or making unwelcome contact with another member will be asked to stop immediately. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the group and/or event, and banning from the group and/or future events.4 No Bigotry or Illegal Activities: Comments containing phobic or bigoted content (based on race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, gender identity, disability, etc) are absolutely not tolerated. Neither are obvious trolls or spam. Any posts pertaining to illegal activity - i.e., asking for advice about pirating, sneaking into events, etc. - are not allowed. All of the above will be immediately removed and may result in a ban..5 Tag the Mods for Help: If something looks dicey or weird and you're not sure it should be on here, or you feel a thread needs mod attention, please tag the moderators rather than responding to questionable content yourself or starting a thread discussing it separately. We're all volunteers so any notification is very much appreciated, and it gives us a chance to diffuse any potential situations. Please check the Code of Conduct in each specific online space for details on how to tag moderators.6 Keep it Relevant: Please keep posted material within the realm of geeky/nerdy interests and social events. For professional or personal posts (i.e. - inquiries about employment opportunities or roommates), please ensure they’re relevant to our community.7 Ask about Photos: While we love sharing photos from social events, please ask permission from people before tagging them in a photo that you post here. Our group is publicly viewable (but only group members can comment), so in order to respect individuals' level of privacy, please either obtain permission from others before tagging them in photos you post here, or allow people to tag themselves if they wish. These policies apply to both the content and tone of comments/posts made in this group as well as in person events. Please keep in mind that even if you may not find a topic worth discussing, that shouldn't prevent others from talking about it - no one is obligated to join in every conversation or have an opinion on everything. If someone says they wish to leave a thread, please respect that and don't tag them to bring them back into the discussion. Repeat offenses against community rules may result in group expulsion and banning.DISCLAIMER: Opinions and material posted in this group are strictly those of their authors and do not necessarily represent the opinion, position or official policies of CNSC unless otherwise noted. Authors are solely responsible for the accuracy of any and all material posted.
